In many of our leagues, we have too many kids to collect birth certificates. In our Arizona rec leagues alone, we have 25,000 registrations per year. It would take our staff way too long to verify each birth certificate. We go off of a trust system and trust the parents will be honest when entering their children’s birthdates.
Each season, however, we have parents and coaches who are concerned that a child is older than the division in which he or she is registered. Children that are too old for a division can create unsafe situations for kids who are on the younger end.
AGE CHECK REQUESTS
Parents and coaches are allowed to make Age Check Requests. When they submit a request, the league will contact the parents of the child and request a birth certificate or other form of identification.
HOW TO SUBMIT AN AGE CHECK
You can submit an age check request by texting or emailing the league. As a member of the league, you should have all that contact info.
WHAT DO I DO IF MY CHILD IS BEING AGE CHECKED?
First, please do not be offended! Usually, a player is being age checked if he/she is taller, faster or more athletic than other kids in the division. This means your child is standing out! A league representative will text or email you letting you know that your child is being age checked. He or she will ask you to submit proof of birthdate directly to them. This will usually be to their email address.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE CHILD CANNOT PRODUCE PROOF OR PARENTS REFUSE TO PROVIDE PROOF?
It will be taken on a case-by-case basis, but the standard result is that child will not be allowed to participate for the remainder of the season.
